ALLISON BARNHART
Allison has been a life-long resident of Ashland, Ohio. In 2006 she
received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Commercial Art from Ashland
University and attended the Art Institute of Pittsburgh her junior year for
the Affiliate Program. She has worked three years as a full-time graphic
designer at Red Red Design in downtown Ashland and does freelance
design work for a variety of non-profit organizations and businesses, as
well as individuals.
Allison's art background stems from a childhood interest and artistic
family members. Her love for music, travel, typography and calligraphy,
photography, history and family history plays an integral part in her
growth as an artist, both as a fine artist and a graphic design artist.
Mostly working in acrylic and charcoal, Allison's style is inspired by a
combination of expressionism from early 20th century Europe and the
Art Nouveau movement. She loves mixing media such as printmaking,
old photos, wax and found objects to add to her paintings. Her interest in
history, especially family history or an individual's life story, comes out in
her work as layered and textured paintings, showing how deep and full
of personal meaning a life or an event can have. She never considers a
piece fully done, because like a history, it continues to change and build
new experiences and feelings on top of the old.
Allison's art has been displayed multiple times at the Don Coburn Art
Gallery on the Ashland University campus and is currently represented
at Art 101 Gallery in Ashland. She won the Sophomore Award in 2004
from the Art Department at Ashland University where she has been
recognized for her work. In March 2009, she won an award for most
thematic for her painting "The Art of Listening" at the local "Shapes in A
Misshapen World" Art Festival.
Allison lives in town with her husband of three years, Jason, and their
two dogs, Lucky and Spencer. She and her husband are expecting their
first child in July.
