RACHEL STERN
I am an intuitive and interpretive artist; one who paints my impression of reality.  For me,
color, light, form and texture provide the most important elements in a painting.  The
beauty of the landscape or the figure provides the inspiration and energy that enables
me to create.

My knowledge of art has grown through my studies at the Columbus College of Art and
Design.  I have also studied at the Studio Art Center International (SACI) in Florence,
Italy.  Through participating in the Docent Program at the Columbus Museum of Art, I
have increased my knowledge of art history.

Landscape has always captivated my attention.  Landscape has a broad definition from
majestic mountains, to rural life to city scenes and even “interiorscape”.  In landscape
painting, I try to capture that fleeting moment of transitory light and atmosphere that
challenges my ability to translate reality to a representational painted image.

Figures are often included in my landscapes.  A human element invites the viewer to
chose a figure to follow into and through the scene.  In “Open Studio” sessions, I have the
opportunity to concentrate on capturing the humanity of the figure.
